Healthy relationships are the foundation of strong families and thriving communities. Recognising this, the Department of Social Development (DSD) has introduced several initiatives to support families, strengthen relationships and provide assistance to single parents.
Government-Supported Family Programmes
The DSD offers free and subsidised counseling services, parenting workshops, and relationship education programs. These initiatives aim to equip families with tools to manage challenges such as financial stress, parenting conflicts, and emotional well-being.
-Parenting Workshops – Sessions on child development, communication, and discipline strategies.
-Relationship Counseling – Free services for couples and families facing difficulties.
-Single Parent Support Groups – Peer-driven spaces to share experiences and gain support.
Community-Driven Initiatives
Several local NGOs also provide valuable support:
- LoveLife SA – Offers youth mentorship programmes.
- SA Family Support Network – Provides mediation services for co-parenting arrangements.
- For those in need of assistance, the GBV Command Centre (0800 428 428) offers free counseling and referrals.
By taking advantage of these resources, families can create stronger, healthier relationships that benefit both individuals and society as a whole.
