One year ago, Asambeni Taxi Times (ATT) hit the ranks with a simple mission: to give a voice to the millions of South Africans who keep our economy moving from the passenger seat of a minibus taxi. This month, as we blow out our first candle, we look back at a year of growth, grit, and incredible community spirit.
From the bustling hubs of Johannesburg to the early morning queues in Pretoria, ATT has become more than just a newspaper; it’s a travel companion and a trusted community pillar. We are a feel-good community newspaper that isn't afraid to tackle taboo topics to help educate our readers. We’ve leaned into the tough conversations, from addressing reproductive health, financial literacy, and substance abuse to mental health and our evolving "Barbershop Talk.
We Are A Proven Powerhouse
In just 12 months, ATT has evolved from a bold idea into a national force. We are now one of the biggest independent publishers in the country, and we are just getting started. For potential partners, our trajectory offers an exclusive gateway into the heart of the South African consumer market:
Massive Audience Reach: We scaled from an initial print run of 35 000 to 150 000 copies per edition within our first two months, reaching an estimated 1.2 million readers.
Direct Distribution: Our copies are hand-delivered at major taxi ranks in Johannesburg and Pretoria, ensuring zero wastage and direct engagement with commuters.
Multilingual Impact: To ensure we reach everyone, we celebrate our heritage by featuring articles in isiZulu, with a plan to expand into other local languages, making our content accessible and resonant.
Industry Credibility: ATT is a proud member of the AIP (Association of Independent Publishers) and a 100% black female-owned Level 1 B-BBEE contributor.
Partner Spotlight: Empowering Local and Global Giants
We have helped major brands reach entirely new audiences with every edition. We take immense pride in empowering local businesses and helping them reach their full potential through targeted community exposure. We are honoured to be the platform of choice for:
Retail & Home: Mambos, Russells, Top T Tiles, and OK Furniture.
Health & Wellness: Dis-Chem, Futurelife and Clere.
Food & Groceries: KFC, Roots and Liquor City.
Automotive & Lifestyle: AutoZone.
Media & Innovation: Our digital website and newspaper takeover with e.tv has set a new standard for cross-platform engagement.
The Milestone Timeline: Our First 365 Days

Year 1: A Growing Family: We now support a distribution network of over 120 local families, turning a local publication into a movement of dignity and economic inclusion
Voices of Hope: Messages from Our Heroes
Belinda Burgers (Eldorado Park Feeding Initiative):
"You’ve helped me take steps to reach a big dream of mine to feed more children and families in Eldorado Park. Being featured in Asambeni showed me that my dream is valid and my work is seen and valued. Happy 1st Birthday to the paper that gives a voice to those of us on the ground!"
Coach Lucas Mananyetso (Seven Stars Foundation):
"Our vision in Atteridgeville is to build a legacy through sport and art. Asambeni understands that our youth need lifelines, not just headlines. Thank you for highlighting our journey and helping us steer our children toward a brighter future."
What’s Next for Year Two?
As we move into our second year, ATT is committed to even deeper community integration:
More Interactive Content: Increased "Commuter Polls" and WhatsApp feedback lines to keep our finger on the pulse of the nation.
Anniversary Mega-Giveaway: Stay tuned for our biggest competition yet, starting next month!
Provincial Expansion: We are looking forward to bringing our unique brand of community journalism to new provinces and more local languages.
Thank you for letting us join your journey. Here’s to many more miles together!
